The Future of Music

So to start off this week's blog post, here's a way cool animation - you've got to watch this mind trip.

And onto the topic.

"The future of music."

Some say that the exploration of the musical frontier is slowing down. There are all kinds of genres that purport to be post- something: post-rock, post-punk, post-new age, etc. etc., but where is all this going? I think as we try to come up with things that are "new," we run the risk of making things that are inaccessible (i'm thinking of jazz that's way out there, music made out of vacuum cleaners, etc.).

So in this age, I've found a few reactions to the inaccessibility of music. There are probably more.

First, there's the look backward.

Beirut - The Penalty

This website, blogotheque, strips down the music to its barebones; I think it sounds and looks really cool. While the music sounds like it's coming out of something old and ancient, it feels new, fresh, and above all personal.

Then, there's the look forward.

Battles - Atlas (live)

Zazen Boyz - Honnoji

Some say we've exhausted the possibility of harmony and melody so we've started to move onto the exploration of rhythm. To me, this music also strikes a fresh chord.

Then there're the people that seem to not take themselves too seriously.

Polysics - Electric Surfin' Go Go

Denki Groove - Fuji San

Oh those crazy Japanese. By the way, Polysics is coming to Boston.

So what's the future of music? What songs are we going to remember years and years from now? And by "we" I mean the collection of humans on this planet 300 years from now?
